Induction and Augmentation of Labor

“Up to half of women giving birth in institutionalized maternity care systems will receive Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) for labor induction or augmentation.”

—Buckley et al 2023

What is induction?

When a woman’s labor is induced this means that her labor hasn't yet started spontaneously, and the doctor is forcing her body to go into labor.

This is done through the use of Pitocin coupled with one or more other mechanical or hormonal procedures. There are many risks to inducing labor. And consequences. You will learn exactly how it is done, what the risks are, and the potential complications and consequences.

What is augmentation?

When a woman’s labor is augmented this means that her labor started spontaneously, meaning contractions started on their own, but at some point during her labor, the doctor or the midwife says they want to start an I.V. drip of Pitocin. Why? Because they have a set of beliefs and training (and other motivators) that cause them to believe this is the best course of action. It is done routinely (meaning, done for almost everyone, rather than each woman's situation being evaluated individually).

The goal Rava Womb stands behind, in all we do, is for a woman to feel calm, confident, and in control of her experience. With that goal in mind this course:

  • gives you in-depth knowledge of how all procedures are performed so that if you were to choose induction or augmentation of your labor, you won’t be surprised by anything.

  • teaches the potential risks involved in these choices, so that you can weigh the benefits against the risks, and then make an informed decision.

  • empowers you to communicate confidently with your care provider (doctor or midwife). You will know exactly what you’re talking about and won’t have to spend time during an appointment relying on them to educate you about these procedures. Since you will already have that knowledge, you can instead spend the time in the appointment discussing options like:  1. whether you want to go ahead with an induction  2. negotiating waiting 3. which parts of an induction you will say yes to, and which parts you won’t.

This course gives clear balanced guidance on the realities of induction and augmentation of labor, helping you understand why these interventions may be recommended and what to expect if they have to become part of your birth journey.

You’ll learn about when and why induction and augmentation might be offered and/or recommended to you, and the downsides of choosing it. And also the rare situations when there might be a benefit to choosing it.

If information about these interventions is not learned in advance of them being recommended to a mother, it can totally take her by surprise, leaving her very unsure of what the right choice is —for her.

By exploring both the science and the emotional impact of interventions like induction and augmentation of labor, you’ll feel prepared to advocate for yourself and your baby no matter what unfolds in your labor.

Whether you hope to avoid interventions or want to be ready if they do need to happen, this course offers practical knowledge and support —so you can navigate this aspect of childbirth with a clear mind.

I loved watching the Rava Womb Birth Prep courses as I prepared to give birth again. During my first home birth, I wasn’t fully prepared and didn’t know what positions could best support me, which made the experience long and drawn out. This time Rava’s teachings empowered me with a variety of supportive positions for every phase of labor. I recalled the positions I'd learned in the waterbirth course, and I got into them in the birth pool when I was pushing and he came right on out!

Rava, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you so very much. When Tracy approached me about your course I have to admit that I thought that there was nothing more to learn as “I had done it all”, being a Paramedic. Oh how I was wrong. Your course was so informative and opened my eyes and my heart to the many possibilities that we all have within ourselves. You have opened these eyes to something that I never would have embraced. I thank you so much for a life changing course and experience.
